SOFIA ALVES DA SILVA
Sofia Alves Da Silva is a versatile trumpeter with vast experience in both classical and contemporary music. Her goal is to make an impact on her community as one of the leading female Latin American figures of the region. Sofia began her formal music studies in Pembroke Pines, Florida at Somerset Academy Charter School. After graduating in 2014, she attended Florida International University (FIU), where she studied trumpet under the instruction of Jim Hacker. During her time there, she performed with several groups such as the Brass Choir, Wind Ensemble, and Symphony Orchestra. After graduating in 2018 from FIU with her Bachelor’s in Music, she decided to further her education and graduated in the spring of 2020 with a Master's degree in Trumpet Performance at FIU. Some of Sofia's recent teachers and influences include David 'Buddy' Deshler of the Dallas Brass &
Cisco Dimas of K.C. and the Sunshine Band.
In 2015, Sofia proudly marched with the Boston Crusaders Drum & Bugle Corps and performed alongside the Boston Pops & Boston Symphony Orchestra during her tour across the continental United States. She returned to the group in 2017 to play lead trumpet. Currently, Sofia plays with local bands and brass ensembles from all kinds of genres including ska, funk, traditional band repertoire and baroque music. Sofia has performed with Grammy Award winning band Ozomatli, and with several local groups such as The Big Skandal, The Alhambra Orchestra, P.R.A.T.O., the Miami Sousa Band, the Miami Heat Street Band and has participated in special performances for the Jonas Brothers, and current Vice President, Kamala Harris, on Telemundo to name a few.
When Sofia is not making music she is sharing her knowledge by teaching in the South Florida area as a Teaching Artist for the Miami Music Project in Little Haiti, and in a variety of marching band programs including Hialeah Gardens High School, Cypress Bay High School, and Somerset Academy High School as a music and marching instructor.
